New technology fools rats activates their flight reflexes

Researchers at Luleå University of Technology have developed a method that scares away rats with sound without killing them. The technology simulates acute threats through signals in the frequency range where rats are most sensitive - the same type of sound as their own warning noises from Tooth squeaks. The sound is patent pending, does not affect humans or domestic animals and activates the rats' subconscious flight reflex.

The rat scare from LTU gets pests to escape - through sound

Rat problems are big in Swedish cities. Now researchers at Luleå University of Technology have developed the "Rat Scare" that fights rats without killing them - using tooth grinding. The sound mimics rats' own warning signals and triggers the limbic system, so that the animals' subconscious flight reflex is activated.

New method to keep rats away - by disturbing them

A new method from Luleå University of Technology could make rat-free places possible. Disturbing sounds are designed to scare rodents away. It involves creating frequencies that are irritating to rats. "For small animals we have to go high up in frequency," explains researcher Örjan Johansson. The method can also be developed to target insects, with the aim of limiting the ability of mosquitoes to fly and bite.
