Repello is not just another in a long line of ineffective rat repellents. It was developed by Professor Örjan Johansson at Luleå University of Technology - and evaluated by researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
In controlled tests, using cameras installed in properties, researchers were able to follow the rats' behaviour in real time. When Repello was activated, the rats first stopped - then panicked and left the area. In several of the trials, the sites remained rat-free for over two weeks, even when the sound was switched off.
Rats have natural alarm signals - specific sounds they use to warn others of danger. Scientists have found a way to recreate these sounds that rats associate with danger.
For the rats, it's like hearing a giant powerful rat signalling danger. Repello is the only product on the market based on this principle, and the technology is now patented.
This creates an extremely unpleasant environment for the rats. Their only instinct is to flee and avoid the area where the signal is emitted.
