After several years of research in collaboration with Luleå University of Technology, scientists have developed Repello - a patented Swedish technology that uses sound waves to activate the reptilian brain of mice and rats.
Traditional ultrasonic scarers have long been on the market - but in tests they have proven to have limited effectiveness. Mice get used to the sound, and soon they are back.
For years, researchers struggled with the same problem that frustrates homeowners: rodents always came back. But in experiments at the university's sound lab, they discovered something unexpected - when sound patterns changed rapidly and unpredictably, the rodents' reptilian brains reacted reflexively. It was the breakthrough that later became Repello.
- We have developed a way to simulate acute threats through sound for the rat. It's not about volume, but about influencing the subconscious with the right kind of signals so that the rat flees, says Örjan Johansson, Professor of Engineering Acoustics at Luleå University of Technology and research leader.
The result: sound sequences that activate the reptile brain's escape reflexes. The effect is so strong that the mice immediately flee - and avoid coming back to the site.

Why previous solutions don't work
The cheap ultrasonic devices sold today are often based on a constant tone. But mice are highly adaptable and quickly learn to ignore the sound.
Repello uses instead complex sound patterns that vary in frequency and intensityThe use of ultrasound technology means that rodents cannot predict or get used to the signals.
- It's all about tricking the brain into thinking something dangerous is approaching, without it actually happening. Unlike simple electronic deterrents, which animals often get used to, these signals are designed to create a reflexive reaction," says Johansson.
From the research lab to Swedish homes
The technology has now been patented and Repello is being made available to households for the first time. Each unit covers up to 40 m² and can be used in kitchens, basements, attics or storage rooms.
Advantages of Repello:
-
Based on research from LTU and SLU
-
Patented Swedish technology
- Tested on multiple species with proven efficacy
-
No poisons or traps
