Sounds like a giant rat warning of mortal danger
A new Swedish invention has changed the way we fight rats and mice. Researchers at Luleå University of Technology (LTU ) have managed to recreate the rats' own natural alarm signals - sounds that they associate with extreme danger.
To the rats, it sounds like a giant rat warning the whole pack of a deadly threat.
The result? Their ancient instinct takes over - and they run for their lives.
- What we do is speak the rats' own language. To them, it sounds like a much bigger and more dangerous animal is coming. The instinct is so strong that they do not dare to stay behind, explains Örjan Johansson, professor of technical acoustics at LTU and research leader.
The new technology, called Repello , gives Swedish homeowners a brand new, non-toxic and effective way to protect their homes - just in time for the period when rat problems explode every year.

When autumn comes - the rat season begins
Every autumn the problems increase dramatically. As temperatures drop, rats and mice seek out homes, garages, basements and storage rooms for warmth and food.
This leads to:
- Cut electrical wires - risk of short circuits and fires.
- Spoilt food in pantries and storerooms.
- Diseases and parasites that can infect both humans and pets.
- Unpleasant odours from urine and faeces.
A pair of rats can multiply to hundreds of individuals in a year. The problem grows rapidly if not addressed in time.
